My interest in making these boxes began with seeing things around me: found objects, the interesting types and styles of clothing people sometimes wear, thrift store items, museum treasures, Mexican altar peices, the cornecopea of beauty and mystery in this world, goofy animals, and the sweetnes and sincerity of folks at times. It makes me want to create little boxes that contain that sweetness, that eccentricity, that mischieviousness, that hope and joy, that oddness, that moment in time that is caught.
The boxes are made of paper mache. The joined areas of where the door conects to the boxes are covered in fafric so that the doors can be sometimes sewn to the box. The exteriors are covered with foil and also painted with fabric paint and acrylics and varnished. The doors close using a hook and eye design. The interiors are made with found objects, and varnished acrylics, candy wrappers, paper, and foil. The people and animals are made with sculpey clay, painted in acrylics and varnished. I title the front of the peice in an attempt to contain that moment in time.
